Sangmyung University is no exception. Until the first semester of 2025, students verified attendance either through the university’s own app, “Sangmyung Smart Attendance”, which used a Bluetooth-based system, or by traditional roll call. Starting from the second semester, however, the school plans to adopt a new system developed by Shinhan Bank: “Heyoung Campus”, a fully digitalized platform for attendance management. Upon opening the Heyoung Campus app, students are greeted with a user-friendly interface. The festival’s name combines Sangmyung’s symbolic deer (Deer) and the phrase “For You,” signifying the idea of “connecting the past and the present, and giving students a special experience.” https://www.smu.ac.kr/webzine/today.do?mode=view&articleNo=759470&article.offset=10&articleLimit=10 This year’s festival took a nostalgic turn, reimagining the music, fashion, games, and street culture of the 1980s and 1990s with a modern twist. The campus was filled with vibrant retro-inspired decorations and the laughter of students, reflecting both the individuality and youthful spirit of Sangmyung University. The Student Council organized a variety of events, including the Sangmyung Game, Watermelon Scrump, Physical 100, Find the Student Council, and a Lucky Draw. Around 30 booths run by student councils and clubs added to the excitement, offering plenty of things to see and enjoy. Among them, the “Maid Café” hosted by College of Convergence Technologybecame the standout attraction. Though unusual at first students in maid outfits serving guests at the booth, word spread across the festival grounds quickly, turning it into the most popular spot of the festival. What began as a quiet corner on the first morning was soon bustling with chatter and laughter, symbolizing the festival’s lively success. A special collaboration with Photoism also captivated students. The “Photo with the President” event, giving students a rare chance to take photos with the university president, proved immensely popular—some even waited over 30 minutes in line. The university’s mascot Sumoong also appeared in a custom photo frame, which gained just as much attention as the president’s frame, creating cherished memories for students. In addition, a dedicated festival website developed by Communication Design and Software majors provided real-time updates and interactive content, earning enthusiastic feedback and showcasing new possibilities for future campus festivals. Festival exclusive merchandise also drew attention. Limited-edition goods such as festival uniforms, slogan cheering bands, tattoo stickers, and Sumoong keyrings were offered, becoming more than just souvenirs—lasting keepsakes that will remind students of this special Daedongje for years to come. The highlight of the festival, however, was the lineup of performances. The Sangmyung Broadcasting Station (SMBS) hosted the “Sorae Sorae Gorae Gorae Song Festival,” while student clubs including SOULO, DARKNESS, CRUNKBRAIN, beatboxer Jae-geun Kim, BLUE, ARIA, and FREEZE lit up the stage with their passionate performances. The open-air theater came alive with cheers as students sang along and applauded their peers’ talents. Celebrity performers elevated the excitement even further. On the first day, Crush and Car the Garden drew roaring crowds, while the second day featured Sikgu, Silica Gel, and KiiKii. With both nights completely filling the outdoor theater, the atmosphere was electric students united through music, chants, and energy that embodied the true spirit of a university festival. For many freshmen, this was their first university festival, and their reactions reflected pure delight. “I had expectations for the festival, but this was even more fun and meaningful than I imagined,” one student shared. Amid the dazzling stages and diverse programs, students set aside their studies for a moment to embrace a shared celebration of youth. President Sung-tae Hong remarked, “I hope this Daedongje becomes a happy memory for students, who are at the heart of the university. By Soi Lee, Cub-Reporter Leesoi3157@naver.com Picture 1: Before the contest begin, at the Cheonan Campus in Hannuri Hall A presentation contest was held at the Cheonan Campus in Hannuri Hall No. 109, on May 27, 2025. The presentation topic for this first semester is “Design My Own Major”, and they can choose one of the topics from a new curriculum using our school's academic system and planning a micro major curriculum by converging majors between campuses. One or two Sangmyung University students each team can form excluding the winner of the prize on the second semester 2024. A total of nine teams go to the finals after submitting presentation videos about three to five minutes in the preliminary round. In the finals, each team has to make a ten-minute presentation and participate in the question-and-answer time, and all finalists can receive an award. In addition, all participants receive 15 points for extracurricular programs mileage. Why This Contest Matters to Students This contest is not merely a competition. It is an educational experience designed to promote academic autonomy, creativity, and interdisciplinary thinking. In a rapidly changing educational curriculum, students are increasingly being asked to take ownership of their learning. By participating in this contest, students are given a rare opportunity to analyze their academic environments and develop personalized pathways that reflect both their interests and career goals. Moreover, the contest helps students to improve crucial soft skills such as public speaking, teamwork, critical thinking, and project planning. Picture 2: Professor Hyewon Lim’s general review before the award An Interview with Professor Hyewon Lim To better understand the intentions and values behind the presentation contest, the following questions were asked to the organizing professor: Hyewon Lim before the contest was held. At first, I asked the professor, who is the faculty of The Gyedang Cultural Education Center and takes charge of general education classes such as Thinking and expression, and Collaborative Communication, why chose this topic “Design My Own Major” as the theme of this contest and what are the unique strengths or advantages that distinguish this contest from other student activities. In response, she replied that this year the importance of self-directed learning has increased as autonomous and convergence majors have expanded further. Also the topic of the contest so far has not been a good topic to capture my story, but this theme was selected by discussing with the Seoul campus faculty because it is expected that the presenters will be able to naturally develop their self-directed learning skills by having more diverse concerns about my career path. And through this competition, you can develop your speaking skills, the most important ability in communication and self-expression, and improve your information processing ability and critical thinking skills in the process of collecting and organizing data for presentations. Additionally, the professor said, "I think writing is the basis of speaking," and gave some tips to get a good result in the competition that it is most important to read and write a lot consistently because speaking skills improve in a step-by-step way. To the Students Who Are Hesitant to Participate Although the first semester 2025 contest has finished, Sangmyung University’s presentation contest is held every semester. This event is an opportunity for all Sangmyung university students to engage with academic topics in a new and practical way. Whether as a contestant or a listener, students are encouraged to take part in next semester’s contest. The professor said to undergraduate students who are still hesitant about participating that is one of the few opportunities to develop their speaking skills before entering society, and said that the time and sincerity they devote to completing the presentation successfully will be a good manure for me to step up, and it will be of great help later if I challenge myself courageously.
