It is a photo exhibition to celebrate UNESCO’s 6th anniversary. Yang Jong-hoon, a professor of digital imaging at the Sangmyung University Graduate School, held a photo exhibition of Jeju haenyeo. Born in Jeju, he has captured the life and culture of Jeju haenyeo on camera for more than 20 years. It is an exhibition which used digital fabric panels for work photos. Furthermore, it is the first exhibition of works produced in a super-sized format using digital fabric panels in Korea.

About the Exhibition Information

The photo exhibition will be held from July 30th to December 10th, 2022, and the location of the photo exhibition is the lobby on the first floor of the Korea Coast Guard Region-Jeju. The exhibition is available every Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is free to watch, but you have to make a reservation by phone in advance. The Haenyeo featured in the Jeju haenyeo photo exhibition is a woman whose job is to enter the sea and collect seafood by controlling breathing by her own will without mechanical devices. Haenyeo is National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 132, and Jeju Haenyeo Culture is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It has enhanced eco-friendly sustainability through eco-friendly fishing activities and fishing management by the community. The photo exhibition, which contained the appearance and culture of haenyeo, is an immersive exhibition that can be enjoyed both digitally and through analog at the same time. In addition, it is an exhibition using an effective material called digital fabric, which allows delicate light to communicate with the outside and adjust the brightness of the work. Therefore, you can maximize your appreciation of the lively works.

Professor Yang Jong-hoon’s exhibition, which he said he hopes will be an opportunity to promote the value of the haenyeo community and the importance of the Jeju Sea, will also be held in Osaka, Japan, early next year.
